ITINERARY

Casa da Montanha
Meet your guide at Casa da Montanha, the gateway to Mount Pico, Portugal’s highest peak. After registration, we begin with a detailed safety briefing and mountain guidance to prepare you for the climb ahead of us.
The Ascent to the Crater
Step onto the volcanic rock and begin the steady climb toward the crater. Over the next three hours, we ascend through steep, uneven, and volcanic ground, gaining elevation steadily. Leading into the heart of the mountain, watch as the Atlantic stretch wider with every meter gained.
Piquinho Summit — The Final Push
From the crater, the final summit (the cone) awaits — a final 30-minute scramble up Piquinho. At the summit, you’re at the highest point in Portugal. Above you is only sky; below, a 360° view of the central islands. Feel the wind, the silence, the altitude — and the reward. Time to celebrate, capture photos, and soak in the achievement.
Crater Lunch Break
Back inside the volcanic crater, enjoy a well-earned lunch surrounded by volcanic walls, vast views and a feeling of peace.
The Descent
After refueling, we begin the three-hour descent to Casa da Montanha, carefully retracing our steps through Pico’s sharp and rugged terrain, with views of Faial and São Jorge. While the descent takes a physical toll, you are filled with the spirit of what you’ve just achieved.
Return to Casa da Montanha
Back at the mountain house, we close the adventure together.

Program may vary slightly depending on weather and group dynamics.

Important Notes

⚠️ This climb is challenging and technical, covering 8 km up and down steep, raw volcanic terrain. Starting at 1.230 m, we summit at 2.351 m, with an elevation gain of 1.100 m. The hike takes 7–8 hours and is designed for physicaly fit hikers with previous hiking experience and strong endurance.
⚠️ Hiking shoes/boots with good grip are mandatory to access the mountain reserve. Casa da Montanha can deny entry if footwear is unsuitable. Be aware that old or infrequently used boots may meet steam failure from hydrolysis, causing the outsole to come loose. Authorized footwear includes mountain boots, trekking shoes, and trail running shoes. Unauthorized footwear includes sandals, flip-flops, sneakers, running shoes, tennis shoes, and work/fashion/flat-soled shoes.
