OUR STORY
Hominis natura was born from a simple belief: people protect what they truly love. And love begins with connection.
Our name, Hominis natura, is Latin and translates to “the nature of man.” For us, it carries a deeper meaning: that we are not separate from nature, but inherently part of it — that our very nature is meant to be one with nature. It reflects a return to what is essential — moving through the landscape on foot, living with awareness, embracing simplicity over speed. In a fast-paced world, we believe in rediscovering the quieter rhythm that once defined us.
PASSIONATE ABOUT WILDLIFE
STEFFI DENECKER
Our story starts far from Pico. Steffi, a biologist from Belgium, once stood at a crossroads, unsure of which direction life should take her. She chose the unknown. In Guinea-Bissau, she studied the sacred forests and the chimpanzees that live there, alongside local communities who honor the spirits of the land. In South Africa, she cared for orphaned rhinoceroses, victims of human greed. These wild places shaped her understanding of conservation — not as theory, but as something lived and deeply felt.
Her journey eventually led her to the island, where she joined a research project studying Risso’s dolphins. But it was Pico, and one particular inhabitant named Nilton, that captured her heart. What began as research became home. What began as curiosity became purpose. Today, she shares her scientific knowledge, curiosity, and unmistakable bright smile to help you see the island as she fell in love with it.
PASSIONATE ABOUT OUTDOOR
NILTON GOULART
Nilton’s story is rooted in the islands. Born and raised in the Azores, he grew up between ocean winds and volcanic landscapes, where nature was not something you visited — it was simply life. As a child, he learned to read the weather, respect the ocean, and move through the land with awareness. Before co-founding Hominis natura, he worked as a fisheries inspector, traveling across all nine islands. The job gave him a deep understanding of the territory — its hidden corners, its rhythms, its people. But his true passion has always been simpler and more elemental.
Nilton feels most at home on a trail, far from noise, carrying only what he needs. He loves the art of bushcraft — working with nature rather than against it — and the quiet ritual of cooking over an open fire after a long day outdoors. For him, hiking is not about reaching a summit. It is about presence, patience, and sharing the journey. When you walk with Nilton, you feel it immediately: a calm strength, a deep respect for the land, and the kind of knowledge that cannot be learned from books alone.
As Hominis natura has grown, so has our team, guided by a shared commitment to nature, curiosity, and creating experiences that matter.
PASSIONATE ABOUT CULTURE
JOÃO MOREIRA
João Moreira joined the Hominis natura family with a story shaped by change and intention. Originally from Porto, he spent several years in Germany working in hospitality and management, leading teams in dynamic, fast-paced environments. Over time, he began to feel drawn toward a different rhythm — one closer to nature and more connected to people and community. With his family and friends already having made the move and created a home in Pico, João followed his heart and chose a new path for himself here.
Passionate about sustainable travel and discovering new cultures, João believes that the most meaningful journeys are built on genuine human connection. His enthusiasm, openness, and positive energy bring warmth to every experience and strengthen the spirit of our team.
Together, we create experiences that go beyond sightseeing. We offer space to slow down, to understand, and to feel part of the natural world. Because when you reconnect with nature, something shifts. And that shift — quiet, personal, powerful — is where true sustainability begins. As we continue to grow, we remain rooted in nature, guided by purpose, and inspired by the people we meet along the way.
