About us
‘Hominis natura – One with nature’ was created from the heart with love for nature and a touch of craziness. The meaning of our name finds its origin in the scientific name of the human species ‘Homo sapiens’. In the classification of the animal kingdom Homo sapiens belong to the tribe ‘Hominini’. With this idea in mind Hominis natura was born. Literally translated as nature of man. We both love to go back to the essentials in life and reconnect with nature. For us, our Hominis natura is one with nature.
Hi there! My name is Steffi and I’m a biologist from Belgium. After graduating university I was searching for a direction in my life. Knowing that I didn’t want to spend hours behind a dusty desk, I decided to jump into the unknown and find my purpose in Africa. In Guinee-Bissau I enrolled in a program that researched the sacred forests of the Boé and the chimpanzees that lived there. When this project finished I was eager for more adventure and went to volunteer at an orphanage for rhinoceros in South Africa. After all these life changing experiences I wanted to spread my wings one last time and changed course to the Azores. I landed on Pico island and joined a research project on the behaviour of the Risso’s dolphin. During this time I fell in love with Pico. I ended up staying for good, having found my direction in life. Now I would love to show you ‘my’ beloved island.
Hi there! My name is Nilton and I am a true Azorean, born and raised on the islands. I have spent my childhood in Santa Maria but came back to Pico when I was a teenager. Before I became a guide with Hominis natura, I was an inspector of fisheries. This job brought me to all the beautiful corners of the nine islands. It allowed me to gain a profound knowledge of the islands that gives me now the perfect background to show you Pico in a completely different way.
The first time I have climbed the mountain was 35 years ago. Things were very different back in those days. There was no Mountain house and we drove towards the mountain in the back of a truck as far as the road would take us. We spend the night in the crater and witnessed the most spectacular sunset and sunrise. The memory always stayed with me. Now I am delighted that I can help you creating this extraordinary experience that will give you a memory that will last forever.
Are you ready for adventure, one with Nature?
